The Free Money Advice Service has been setup by the government to provide impartial advice on most financial matters but is particularly good on Equity Release.

Equity Release is a minefield but a necessary minefield! Get it right and older people can raise money on their property - potentially allowing them to afford to stay in their homes for the rest of their lives. Get it wrong and they can accumulate an enormous debt and effectively disinherit their children as the finance company claims their home in order to repay the accumulated loan when they die. The link below may help you decide whether this might be a useful route to go down. However just as importantly consider using a financial adviser.
This is a simple AgeUK Equity Release calculator which will help you find out how much an equity release loan would allow you to raise on your house.

TSB Bank

Super-friendly customer service. I switched bank toTSB knowing that I don't have a branch in my hometown but Slough is the nearest. Of course, with so much available online a visit to a branch is almost a rarity. It was nice that when I did visit I was treated so well, as a valued customer.

Good branch, very busy but never do not stay more than 10 minutes.

Good branch but quite busy

NatWest Bank

177 Buckingham Ave, Slough SL1 4RD, UK – 0345 788 8444

Used to be really good but nowadays there's no staff, queues out the door. Banks are generally busy at the same time each day and week. Surely they should notice this trend.

Seeing as NatWest decided to close the Burnham and Farnham Road branches in March 2015 and keep the Trading Estate branch open, you can imagine the branch is very busy. So they revamped this branch with extra counters, Saturday opening and self-service machines like coin counters . My first try of this was unsatisfactory as it rejected several coins so I had to join the queue anyways. The staff are really friendly. Having car parking out front is handy if you can get parked. But out of convenience on a more regular basis I use the Burnham Post Office for paying in (limited to £250 cash per day) but NatWest never agreed with Post Office over providing coin cash withdrawls and the pay in restrictions are not overly satisfactory.

Building Societies

Nationwide Building Society

170 High St, Slough SL1 1JP, UK – 0800 554 0329

Since I first came here to open my account and since further visits for business I can happily report the staff are diligent, friendly and accomodating. Monika especially on my last visit smashed it. Very busy branch and with the service provided it is easy to see why.

A good old fashioned Mutual building society where customers come first, staff very approachable and chatty. Their mortgage rates probably best in UK, I have had my mortgage here for years, each time I re-assess Nationwide comes out best.
